Iran, China, Russia begin naval exercises in Indian Ocean

International Desk:  The navies of Iran, China and Russia are going to start a joint exercise in the northern Indian Ocean. The main goal of which is to increase the security of the region and improve trilateral naval cooperation.

The naval exercise, named 'Security Belt 2025', will begin on Monday, the Iranian military exercises media office reported on Sunday.

The report said that observers from Azerbaijan, South Africa, Oman, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Qatar, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates and Sri Lanka will monitor the exercise.

The drills will involve the Iranian Navy and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) naval forces, along with ships from the Russian and Chinese navies. It is the seventh edition of the Iran, Russia and China 'Security Belt' drills.

On Sunday, China's official news agency Xinhua reported, citing Beijing's Ministry of National Defense, that the joint exercise will be held near the Iranian port of Chabahar.

Xinhua also said that the Chinese fleet will include a destroyer and a supply ship. The plan of the exercise includes attacks on maritime targets, damage control and joint search and rescue operations.

China's Defense Ministry said the exercise aims to "strengthen military mutual trust and enhance practical cooperation between the navies of participating countries." 

The 2024 edition of this exercise was held in the same region last year, where an impressive closing naval parade of various warships was organized.
