Hungary withholds 30 billion in aid to Ukraine

International Desk:  The European Union (EU) had offered to provide 30 billion euros in military aid to Ukraine. However, it was blocked by the veto of Hungary, one of the members of the European alliance. 

Russian media outlet RT reported this information in a report on Friday (March 7).

The report said that the issue of providing aid to Ukraine was raised in the form of a proposal at a meeting of the European Council, the executive branch of the European Union, in the Belgian capital of Brussels on Tuesday (March 4). At that time, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban vetoed it. 

Arguing for the objection, Orban said, "It is being said that this aid is being provided so that Ukraine can continue the war. This is our objection, because Hungary never supports or condones war or conflict. Hungary's main policy is peace, dialogue and diplomatic activity."

In an interview with Kossuth Radio on Thursday, Viktor Orban warned, "The EU does not have the financial capacity to help Ukraine."

He explained, "If all the planned initiatives, including another aid package for Kiev, financing of the EU membership bid and increasing European defense spending, go ahead, the bloc's budget will be greatly reduced."

Incidentally, 28 countries on the European continent are members of the EU. According to the EU constitution, which was formed in 1949, if a member state objects to a decision of the alliance, it is not implemented or enforced.

But Orban may not be successful this time. Because after the Brussels meeting, European Council President Antonio Costa told reporters, 'Hungary has a different view on the Ukraine issue and this difference is causing Hungary to be isolated. On this issue, the 27 member states of the bloc are currently on one side and Hungary is on the other.'
