Economist Akbar Ali Khan is no more

News desk: Renowned economist and former caretaker government advisor Akbar Ali Khan passed away.

He was declared dead at United Hospital in the capital on Thursday night. Earlier, he was taken to the hospital when he suddenly fell ill at home. The doctors said that he died of a heart attack.

His younger brother Kabir Uddin Khan confirmed the death to the media and said that Akbar Ali Khan was being taken to the hospital when he fell ill. He died in the ambulance on the way there. When he was taken to the hospital, the doctor on duty declared him dead.

This distinguished economist was born in 1944 in Nabinagar, Brahmanbaria. He completed his graduation and post graduation in History from Dhaka University. Later he did MA and PhD in Economics from Queen's University, Canada.

During the liberation war in 1971, he was the Mahukuma Administrator or SDO of Habiganj. At that time he actively worked with the Mujibnagar government. Pakistan government prosecuted him for this crime during the liberation war. 14 years rigorous imprisonment was given.

After the independence of the country, he worked in government jobs and was also associated with university teaching. In 2006, he was an advisor to the caretaker government led by President Yazuddin Ahmed. However, fearing that the election would not be completed properly, Akbar Ali Khan resigned along with three advisers. He also served as the Chairman of the Regulatory Reforms Commission.
