Sports Desk: Mushfiqur Rahim was well ahead in the race to become the best of the ICC. In the Sri Lanka series, he was nominated for the award for great consistency with the bat. However, in that series, Angelo Mathews, who spread the light with the bat for Sri Lanka, finally got the Masera award.

Apart from Mushfiqur, Mathews' opponent in the race to become the best was Asitha Fernando, the Sri Lankan fast bowler who overcame the pace magic of Bangladeshi batsmen. Matthews became the first Sri Lankan to win the title since the introduction of the Masera Award in 2021, beating Mushfiqur and Asitha.

Mathews scored 344 runs in two centuries for the Lankans in two Tests in the series against Bangladesh, including a great 199-run innings in the Chittagong Test. Like Mathews, Mushfiqur has scored a century in both Tests, scoring 303 runs.

Another Sri Lankan cricketer nominated by Massera was Asitha, the top wicket-taker in the series. Asitha got 13 wickets in two Tests and got 10 wickets in Dhaka Test. He became only the second Sri Lankan to do so on foreign soil.

The ICC's voting academy and cricket supporters are voted the best of the month by a joint vote. The voting academy is home to senior sports journalists, former cricketers and commentators. They vote by e-mail. And registered supporters can vote on the ICC website.
