At an Asian security conference, the island nation of Fiji said climate change was a bigger threat than military tensions in the Pacific. "Machine guns, warplanes ... are not primarily our security concerns," said Inya Seruiratu, the country's defense minister. The only threat to us is climate change.

Sino-US tensions and the Ukraine war were at the center of discussions at the conference in Singapore. However, the Defense Minister of Fiji has brought up the issue of climate change without giving importance to all these.

The Pacific island nation of Fiji and other Pacific nations have been hit repeatedly by cyclones. Addressing the Shangri-La Dialogue Forum at the conference, Inya Seruiratu said that man-made catastrophic climate change is a threat to our hopes and dreams of prosperity.

Thousands of people have been displaced by floods caused by tropical cyclones in Fiji over the past few years. There has also been an economic catastrophe. Pacific nations are urging industrialized nations to do more about climate change.

Addressing the conference, the Fiji Defense Minister said that the waves of the sea hit our door. The wind blows in our house. In many ways we are being hit by this enemy (climate change).

The use of fossil fuels emits greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide. As a result, global temperatures have risen by 1.2 degrees Celsius since the nineteenth century.
