International Desk: A new variant of the virus, Omicron, has been identified in the Netherlands before two flights arrived from South Africa last week with other passengers, including those infected with the coronavirus, Dutch health officials said.

The country's National Institute for Public Health (RIVM) said on Tuesday that at least 14 passengers on two flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town to Amsterdam's Schiffel Airport on November 26 had carried the new strain of coronavirus.

The RIVM said in a statement that it had received "omicon variants" of the coronavirus in two samples collected earlier on November 19 and 23. It is unknown at this time what he will do after leaving the post.

The World Health Organization (WHO) says a new variant of the corona, Omicron, was first detected in South Africa on November 24. At the same time, the company has listed Omicron as a 'worrying variant'.

But in a sample seven days before it was detected in South Africa, the Netherlands confirmed Omicron infection, RIVM said on Tuesday. The National Institutes of Public Health says people have been alerted after Omicron was identified in samples from the two men, and the municipal health department has now begun contact tracing.

The discovery of Omicron, which has been transformed into a spike protein more than 32 times, has raised new concerns around the world. Many health experts have already warned that this variant of corona may be 'vaccine resistant'. Fear of becoming immunocompromised by Omicron also increases the risk of illness, increased hospital admissions, and prolonged epidemics that have been going on for more than two years.

RIVM said that in the coming days, various studies on Omicron variant will be conducted in the Netherlands. Previous samples will also be re-tested.

Among the European countries, the Netherlands has so far identified the highest number of 18 omikrons. The corona of 71 passengers on two flights from South Africa to the Netherlands was also identified; Some of them are infected with Omicron. They are currently in quarantine in Amsterdam.

Over the past few days, Dutch authorities have been trying to communicate and test corona with about 5,000 passengers from South Africa, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia and Zimbabwe.

More than 20,000 people are being diagnosed with coronary heart disease daily in the Netherlands. Strict corona bans have been imposed in the country since Sunday to ease pressure on hospitals.
