At least 15 people have been killed and three others are missing after heavy rains and flash floods and landslides swept through China's northern province of Shanxi over the past week. The Times of India, India's national daily, said in a report quoting the country's state-run Xinhua news agency.

Wang Kirui, an official with the Shaanxi branch of China's Central Disaster Management Authority, told Xinhua that "about 1,900 buildings in Shanghai have been completely destroyed by heavy rains over the past week, with another 1,700 buildings severely damaged."

‘According to the information we have, 15 people have died in Shangji so far due to this devastating natural disaster, 3 people are missing. However, this number may increase further.

Wang told Xinhua that at least 1.08 million people in the province had been affected by the floods.

Pictures published in Chinese newspapers show cars, buses, etc. on the flooded roads in Shanxi due to the floods, and traffic police members carrying small children on their laps or shoulders.

Shanxi is an important coal mining region in China. There are at least 60 coal mines in different parts of the province.

However, due to heavy rains and floods, coal extraction from all but four mines has been suspended, Wang Kirui said.

According to the country's central meteorological office, the province has received three times as much rainfall in the past week as the average annual rainfall in Shanxi.

Just three months ago, unprecedented rains and flash floods killed 300 people in China's central Henan province.

According to Chinese meteorologists, the effects of climate change and global warming around the world are causing frequent disasters in China.
