Voting is going on in 160 UP and 9 municipalities

News Desk: The first phase of voting in 180 Union Parishad elections has started from Monday morning. At the same time general elections in 9 municipalities and by-elections in two upazilas have started.

Voting will continue from 8 am to 4 pm. EVM voting is taking place in all the 9 municipalities and in 11 out of 180 union parishads.

A number of local government council by-elections are also being held today. However, 44 Awami League candidates have already won without contest.

In this regard, the Joint-Secretary of the Election Commission Asaduzzaman said, the members of the law enforcement forces are already in the field for a fair and neutral election. Election related institutions and officers and employees will be on general leave. Voters will also be able to take leave from the concerned institutions to cast their votes.

Motorcycles will be banned in the constituency from 12 noon on Saturday (September 18) to 12 noon on September 21. Truck-pickups, launch-speedboats and motorized boats will be closed in the constituency from 12 noon on September 19 to 12 noon on September 20, the day before the polls. However, other transports including emergency services will be able to operate.

Voting is going on in 180 unions of 23 upazilas of six districts of the country. Voting in 18 UPs has been postponed. Of these, five are due to the deaths of candidates for the post of chairman and the St. Martin's Union Parishad vote in Cox's Bazar is not being held at the moment due to hostile weather.

Besides, Khulna Koira's Amadi, Bagali, Maheshwaripur, Maharajpur, Koira, North Bekashi and South Bedkashi. Earlier, in the first phase, the Election Commission (EC) had announced the schedule for holding elections in 361 UPs in 64 upazilas of 19 districts of the country. According to the announced schedule, these elections were to be held on April 11. However, the election was postponed due to the increase in corona. Later, on June 21, 204 polling stations in UP were postponed.

In the first phase of 160 Union Parishad (UP) elections postponed due to the Corona epidemic, 44 Awami League-nominated chairman candidates have been elected unopposed. The situation is believed to have arisen as the BNP, the main opposition party in field politics, has announced a boycott of the UP elections.

Voting will be held in about four and a half thousand UPs in the country in a few steps. On March 3, the Election Commission announced the schedule of 361 UP votes in the first phase. Voting was later postponed due to the Corona situation.
