News Desk: In order to increase power generation from renewable (solar) energy sources, 100 MW solar power plant will be constructed at Madarganj in Jamalpur.

The project will be presented for approval at a meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) on Tuesday (August 10th).

The Prime Minister and ECNEC Chairperson Sheikh Hasina will preside over the meeting by joining the NEC conference room through video conference from Ganobhaban. This information has been known from ECNEC working paper.

The concerned officials said that the project titled 'Construction of Sheikh Hasina Solar Park, A Madarganj 100 MW Solar Power Plant at Jamalpur' will be presented for approval at the ECNEC meeting. The project was proposed to the Planning Commission from the Power Department. Once approved, the project will be implemented by Rural Power Company Limited (RPCL) from January to December 2023 this year. The company will build this solar park by 2023.

The total cost for the project is estimated at Tk 1,511.69 crore. Of this, Tk 319.40 crore will be spent from government funds, Tk 1,117 crore from loans and Tk 6 crore from the company's own funds.

The main activities of the project are- Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) work of Madarganj 100 MW Solar Power Station, Development of 325.7536 acres of land for construction of 100 MW Solar Power Station, 132 KV 48 km. Construction of Power Evacuation Line and Evacuation Infrastructure (from proposed Power Station to Ghatail Grid Substation), 100 May. Construction of office building, workshop, warehouse and Ansar barracks of Watt Solar Power Station, construction of necessary infrastructure for rehabilitation of 6 landless families and long term settlement of 325.7538 acres of land.

In the Eighth Five Year Plan, the target has been set to generate 10 percent of the total electricity consumption through renewable energy by 2025. According to the Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority (SREDA), currently 3.24 per cent of the total electricity generation is generated from renewable energy. 100 MW through the project. Since the initiative has been taken to build a solar power plant, the project is in line with the Eighth Five Year Plan.

In this regard, Sharifa Khan, Member (Secretary), Department of Industries and Energy, Planning Commission, said that if the project is implemented, it will diversify power generation as well as reduce carbon emissions. In addition, renewable energy will play a significant role in increasing power generation and will be submitted to ECNEC for approval.

Since 2016, seven solar parks have been built in the country. The total generation capacity of these centers is 130 MW. The largest solar power plant among the established solar parks has been constructed at Gauripur in Mymensingh. The total generating capacity of this power plant is 50 MW.
