BNP Chairperson Tarique Rahman has said that if BNP comes to power, the Teesta Barrage Mega Plan will be implemented as quickly as possible. He made the remarks on Saturday (7 February) while addressing an election rally in Nilphamari.
He said that on the 12th, people of the country will cast their votes. “Voting alone is not enough—we must rebuild the country. We have to do this because we have nowhere else to go. Our first and last address is Bangladesh,” he said.
Tarique Rahman noted that there is an EPZ in the area and said BNP wants to expand it further to create employment opportunities for local people. He added that training centers would be established in the region to develop skills among young people so they can become skilled workers.
Stating that mothers and sisters would be made self-reliant if BNP wins, Tarique Rahman said the party wants to deliver a family card to every woman, through which every mother would receive support from the government. He also said there are plans for farmers, noting that the region is agriculture-dependent. “If farmers do well, the country’s people will do well. To ensure they can easily access agricultural inputs, we will provide them with agriculture cards,” he said.
Speaking about religious leaders, he said that many imams and khatibs of mosques and madrasas, as well as religious leaders of other faiths, live in inhumane conditions. If BNP forms the government, he said, arrangements would be made to provide them with honorariums.
On the Teesta Mega Plan, he said that there is a heartfelt demand of the people of this region—implementation of the Teesta Mega Plan. “If BNP comes to power on the 12th, one of the top priorities will be to implement the Teesta Mega Plan as quickly as possible so that this region can become green and fertile,” he said. He added that there is a demand for establishing a medical college in Nilphamari, which would be implemented gradually. He also said that Kishoreganj–Syedpur is an industrial zone and that BNP wants to develop railway workshops and other industries in the area.
He further said that people in the region are being intimidated so they cannot vote, warning that legal action would be taken against anyone who issues threats or engages in wrongdoing.
