Jamaat firm on referendum decision before elections, new decision expected

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami remains firm on its demand that a referendum must be held before the national parliamentary election.

This was stated by Naib-e-Amir Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher in an immediate reaction to Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus’s address to the nation on Thursday.

He said, “Some points in the Chief Adviser’s speech need further clarification. We will review the matter internally and make a decision afterwards.”

He also expressed concern that if the referendum is held on the same day as the national election, its significance could be overshadowed.

Earlier, in his address to the nation, Chief Adviser Professor Yunus announced that the referendum will be conducted on the day of the national parliamentary election.

He clarified that the referendum will take place in the first half of February, coinciding with the national election. He assured that this will not hinder the reform process and will make the election more festive and cost-effective. Necessary legislation to conduct the referendum will be drafted in due course.
