Tech Desk: Google Translate has introduced a new feature that allows users to learn a new language directly through the app. This is made possible through artificial intelligence (AI) technology. The new feature positions Google Translate as a direct competitor to popular language-learning apps like Duolingo.
Unlike other language-learning platforms, Google Translate now uses AI to create personalized lessons for each user. To begin, users need to press the “Practice” button in the app. They are then prompted to select their learning level—Basic, Intermediate, or Advanced. Next, the app asks about the user’s purpose for learning the language.
Users can either type their responses manually or choose from pre-set options. The AI then analyzes this information and designs a curriculum tailored to the user’s needs.
Similar to apps like Duolingo, users will have opportunities to practice listening and speaking. However, these exercises are structured based on pre-selected course requirements.
Initially, this feature is being rolled out for beta users on Android and iOS. At launch, English-speaking users will be able to learn Spanish and French. Conversely, speakers of French, Spanish, and Portuguese can learn English.
Additionally, Google Translate has introduced another AI-powered feature: Live Translate. This allows two people speaking different languages to communicate in real-time, with both audio and text translations displayed instantly. The functionality is similar to the “Live Translate” feature on the Pixel 10 phone. However, the translated audio in Google Translate does not mimic the user’s voice or tone.
Google claims that this feature will create a more natural conversational environment. It can even isolate speech in noisy settings like airports, making communication easier and clearer. Live Translate is currently available in over 70 languages, including Arabic, French, Hindi, Korean, Spanish, and Tamil. The feature is initially available to users in the United States, India, and Mexico.
