News Desk: If necessary, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) will be newly formed, said Home Affairs Advisor Lieutenant General Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (retd.).

He said this in response to a question from reporters after a meeting of the Law and Order Advisory Council Committee of the Ministry of Home Affairs at the Secretariat on Tuesday (February 18) afternoon.

The Home Affairs Advisor said, "There has also been a discussion about RAB. We have sent a proposal regarding this, meaning an idea has been given. A name. We will have to think about it a little in the next meeting."

When asked whether the name would be changed, he said it would be decided at the next meeting.

What is the decision? Reorganize? In response, the Home Affairs Advisor said, "Yes, it will be reorganized if necessary."

Before July-August 2024, various allegations were made against this specialized police force. In the last one and a half months, more than 1,600 complaints were filed against RAB in the commission formed by the government to investigate the disappearances. This black-clad force played a direct role in the ruthless killing of people during the student uprising.

Out of the 383 complaints received by the Commission on Disappearances, 172 were found to be against RAB. Especially when RAB's involvement in the seven murders discussed in Narayanganj became apparent, there was a storm of discussion in the country and abroad. The force has also admitted responsibility for the incident. RAB has also expressed regret and apologized to the families of the victims of the murders.

RAB detention centers have also been discovered, where missing persons were held and tortured for years.

Moreover, there have been long-standing allegations of human rights violations against this force. In the last 16 years, some top officers of this force have committed various atrocities. The fascist Sheikh Hasina government has used this time for crossfire for a long time.

During the government's rule, which fell in a mass uprising, RAB was accused of killing, crossfire, disappearances and torture of opposition political leaders and activists. There were also demands for the organization to be abolished. BNP chairperson and three-time former prime minister Khaleda Zia also demanded the abolition of RAB.

There were allegations that RAB helicopters fired at protesters during the July coup. In addition, a recent report by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights recommended the abolition of RAB due to various other allegations.
