International desk: The South American country of Peru has been shaken by a powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.2. The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the earthquake struck in the South Pacific early Friday morning (June 28) 91 kilometers southeast of San Juan de Marcona in the country's Ica city. A tsunami warning has been issued as a result. The tremor was felt in the Nazca province of Peru's Ica region early Friday morning, Anadolu reported, citing the USGS.
The earthquake was at a very shallow depth of 28 km and tremors were widely felt in many areas. Peru's Ministry of Health reported that five people were injured in the earthquake. They have been treated. Residents of the country's Aika region and surrounding areas reported strong tremors.
Peru authorities have issued a tsunami warning on the coast due to the earthquake. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with local emergency services to ensure rapid assistance. Seismic activity is not uncommon in the region, which is located along the Pacific Ring of Fire.
The area is known for frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The USGS said it continues to monitor aftershocks and the potential for more earthquakes. Residents of the country are advised to be vigilant and follow safety protocols. No damage has been reported so far after the earthquake.
