22 people died in floods on the east coast of South Africa

International Desk: At least 22 people have died in floods caused by heavy rains and strong winds on the east coast of South Africa. The local authority has informed this information. Floods hit several places in the two eastern provinces.

After two tornadoes hit there, temperatures dropped significantly. Snowfall was reported at several places in the central region. News from AFP. A spokesman for the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality said at least 11 people had died in the Eastern Cape.

More than 2,000 people have been evacuated from Nelson Mandela Bay. Many people were evacuated, especially from temporary houses in the municipality.  Local authorities have appealed for help with clothing, food and blankets.

The provincial government of neighboring KwaZulu-Natal also said at least 11 people had died in and around the port city of Durban. Provincial authorities have issued a warning in KwaZulu-Natal.

A statement from the provincial government said 55 people suffered minor to moderate injuries and are being treated in hospital. Heavy rains and floods displaced at least 120 people and set up three temporary shelters. 

In 2022, Durban and its surrounding areas experienced the worst flooding in South African history. At that time, more than four hundred people lost their lives in the landslide.  Meanwhile, rescue teams have been deployed in flood-affected areas. Houses were swept away by floodwaters, roads were inundated and trees were uprooted.

There are power outages in many places.  Heavy rain lashed the eastern Indian Ocean coast and the country's meteorological department issued weather warnings for four of South Africa's nine provinces.
