International Desk: More than 670 people have lost their lives so far in a terrible landslide in Papua New Guinea, a country close to Australia and in the Pacific Ocean. Many of the villages that were almost wiped out by the landslides are still missing. British media BBC reported this information.
More than 150 houses were buried in a village in Papua New Guinea's Enga province in Friday's landslide, said Serhan Aktoprak, spokesman for the United Nations Migration Agency in Papua New Guinea. It is believed that more than 670 people lost their lives. Serhan Aktoprak said the situation there is dire and landslides are still happening.
As the water flows, it poses a major risk to everyone there. Rescue work has become difficult in the muddy hilly terrain. Besides, the rescue work is being hampered due to the collapse of about 200 meters of the main road connecting this area. Local residents are using spades for rescue work.
The army members of the country have also come forward for rescue work. The crash site is located 600 km northwest of the country's capital, Port Moresby. The landslide deposited up to 26 feet of mud in some places.
