Heavy floods and landslides kill 23 in Papua New Guinea

International Desk: At least 23 people have lost their lives in floods and landslides caused by heavy rains in the highlands of Papua New Guinea. Many houses were damaged and roads were washed away. News from AFP.

The acting director of the National Disaster Center Lusetman said on Monday (March 18), a mother and child were among the dead. The people of many areas have been affected due to the inclement weather.

He further said that 23 people were buried under the ground in three separate landslides in different parts of Simbu province.

It is said in the news that due to the continued bad weather, the hilly areas have suffered a lot of damage. The province consists of six districts and has a population of about 376,000. The province is also known as Simbu.

The huge sea waves caused by this natural disaster hit the coastal areas and the people there are also in harm's way. The government has allocated relief aid to deal with this disaster.

According to the 2022 Global Risk Index, Papua New Guinea is ranked the 16th most vulnerable country in the world to climate change and natural disasters.
