Tarique Rahman: Ensuring Fascism Does Not Get a Chance to Rehabilitate

News Desk: BNP’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has called on everyone to remain vigilant so that fascism does not get a chance for rehabilitation.

He made this statement on Saturday (July 19) while joining virtually at a memorial meeting held at the Krishibid Institution Bangladesh (KIB) auditorium.

The meeting was organized by the student wing of BNP’s private university branch in remembrance of the martyrs of the July movement.

Tarique Rahman said the national election is imminent and that institutionalizing democracy is extremely important. He urged the nation to take a responsible role to ensure that no extremist or fascist forces get rehabilitated in the future in state and politics due to any emotional or wrong decisions.

He added there are public questions about whether some are trying to create a deliberate situation in the country with the help of parts of the caretaker government. He also questioned whether a caretaker government can hold an acceptable election if political rights are not guaranteed.

The BNP leader stressed that to establish a government of the people, there must be an electoral system where every voter can confidently vote for their preferred candidate and establish a government by the people. Without empowering the people, no effort will be effective or sustainable.

Calling on the caretaker government to take a more transparent and courageous role in controlling the situation, he said that people who believe in democracy will stand by them. Political parties who believe in democracy will support them if their role is transparent and courageous.

Tarique Rahman said the martyrs of 2024 will be remembered just like those of 1971. The martyrs are the pride of the nation in the mass uprising, and true respect can be shown to them by building the Bangladesh of their dreams — which will begin with establishing a government of the people.

The memorial was attended by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Standing Committee members Mirza Abbas and Abdul Moin Khan, Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, among others, who also spoke at the event.
