International Desk: India is closely monitoring Bangladesh’s discussions with China regarding the possible purchase of J-10CE multirole fighter jets, as well as developments related to the proposed Bangladesh–Myanmar–China Economic Corridor.

India has also reiterated that its position on the Teesta River project remains unchanged, according to Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal.

He made the remarks during the ministry’s weekly press briefing on Friday (July 3).

The comments came in response to separate questions concerning Bangladeshi Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s recent visit to China, during which Bangladesh reportedly discussed the potential acquisition of J-10CE fighter aircraft and considered Beijing’s proposal for the Bangladesh–Myanmar–China Economic Corridor.

Responding to the questions, Jaiswal said, “We closely monitor all such developments in our neighbourhood and take appropriate measures whenever necessary.”

Referring specifically to ongoing discussions surrounding the Teesta River Comprehensive Management and Restoration Project during the Bangladeshi Prime Minister’s visit to China, the Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson said that India had already conveyed its views on the project to Bangladesh.

“Our development cooperation for projects in Bangladesh is based on a mutually agreed roadmap, which is reviewed regularly. Our position on the Teesta River project has already been communicated to Bangladesh,” he said.

He added that India would continue to take all developments related to Bangladesh into account while shaping its broader policy.

During his visit to China last week, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman stated that the Teesta Barrage Master Plan is a national priority and that it would be implemented "at any cost."

Chinese officials also emphasized that Beijing’s cooperation with Bangladesh is not directed against any third country.
