News Desk: The government has set a target to recruit personnel for 500,000 vacant positions over the next five years. To achieve this, the Ministry of Public Administration has taken up a time-based action plan.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan shared the information during a briefing on Tuesday, marking the government’s first three months in office. He also highlighted the achievements of various ministries.

Speaking at the Secretariat regarding recruitment for vacant posts, the minister said, “According to the election manifesto, all ministries and divisions have been instructed to send information on vacant posts and time-based recruitment plans to the Ministry of Public Administration and the Cabinet Division.”

Discussing the impact of the Middle East crisis, the minister stated, “Through the government’s effective and coordinated initiatives, it has been possible to successfully overcome the country’s fuel crisis and ensure uninterrupted fuel supply at the consumer level.”

He further said that fuel cards have already been introduced to bring discipline to fuel distribution. At present, a total of 387,211 vehicles across the country have been registered under the fuel pass system. Additionally, 223 filling stations nationwide have come under this program.

Referring to plans to strengthen the country’s energy security and expand the capacity of the nation’s only state-owned oil refinery, Eastern Refinery Limited, the minister said the government is moving forward with plans to establish a second unit. “Trial operations of the second unit will begin in 2029, and an international tender will be invited next month,” he added.

Mentioning a Cabinet decision, the minister also said the government has taken a policy decision to strongly encourage the import of environmentally friendly electric buses. In particular, arrangements are being made so that educational institutions can import these buses duty-free.

He explained that if a single educational institution operated its own bus service, around 50 guardians would no longer need to use separate private cars, which would help reduce traffic congestion and pollution. Work has already begun on preparing a clear definition and policy framework regarding what size buses for public transport can be imported duty-free.
