PMI Plays a Crucial Role in Economic Policymaking: Bangladesh Bank Governor

Staff Correspondent: Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) is a crucial tool for understanding the real-time dynamics of the economy and supporting evidence-based policymaking, Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr Ahsan H Mansur said on Wednesday.

‎Speaking as the chief guest at a seminar titled “Systematic Efforts to Understand Economic Pulse: Importance of Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI)”, Dr Mansur noted that PMI provides high-frequency, forward-looking data that help policymakers assess trends across manufacturing, services, and construction sectors.
‎The seminar was held at the Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) building in Gulshan, Dhaka.
‎Dr Mansur said that alongside traditional macroeconomic indicators, PMI can significantly enhance policymakers’ ability to respond to economic challenges in a timely and informed manner. He emphasised that reliable and regular data are essential for maintaining stability and strengthening business confidence.

‎James Goldman, Deputy High Commissioner and Development Director of the British High Commission in Dhaka, attended the seminar as a special guest. He highlighted the importance of data-driven economic analysis and said that tools like PMI contribute to greater transparency and informed decision-making.
‎The keynote presentation was delivered by Dr Masrur Reaz, Chairman and CEO of Policy Exchange Bangladesh, who explained the methodology, data collection process, and policy relevance of PMI in assessing economic performance.

‎The event was chaired by Mr Farooq Ahmed, Secretary General and CEO of MCCI, who said that systematic use of indicators such as PMI would support better policy formulation, improve the business environment, and strengthen investor confidence.

‎The seminar was attended by senior officials, economists, business leaders, researchers, and representatives from both public and private sectors.
