Patuakhali University of Science and Technology (PUST) Correspondent: To address the challenges of climate change and rising sea levels, the project ‘ADM-LAB: Living Labs for Adaptive Delta Management in Bangladesh’ is set to inaugurate a new chapter in Bangladesh’s delta management. Patuakhali University of Science and Technology (PUST) is one of the key partners in this project.
On the morning of Tuesday, 11 November, a ceremony was held at Hotel Bengal Blueberry in Dhaka to inaugurate four research projects. The chief guest of the event was Dr. Munzur Hossain, Member of the General Economic Division (GED) of the Planning Commission. Special guests included Professor Dr. Kazi Rafiqul Islam, Vice-Chancellor of PUST, and His Excellency Mr. Joris van Bommel, Ambassador of the Netherlands to Bangladesh.
In his speech, Professor Dr. Kazi Rafiqul Islam stated,
“Bangladesh is a riverine country, with its geography and way of life deeply intertwined with delta-based ecosystems. However, climate change now threatens the very existence of these regions. The ADM-LAB project is a timely and practical initiative to address this challenge, creating a sustainable and inclusive approach to delta management.”
He further explained, “This project will not only provide research-based data but will also establish a Living Lab involving local communities, farmers, fishers, and policymakers, initiating practical changes at the field level. It will serve as an effective support for implementing Bangladesh’s Delta Plan 2100.”
The Vice-Chancellor added, “I am proud that PUST is included among the four projects. It offers our young researchers the opportunity to participate in internationally recognized research, sending a message of hope for Bangladesh’s future.”
The PUST project is being jointly conducted with Wageningen University and Research (WUR), Netherlands, and Khulna University. The consortium is led by Professor Dr. Md. Iqtiar Uddin, Registrar and Researcher at PUST.
The day-long event was attended by domestic and international researchers, faculty members, and government officials. On behalf of PUST, Professor Dr. Md. Iqtiar Uddin, Project Director, presented the main paper on the project.
He remarked, “Through the ADM-LAB project, we aim to develop a participatory and innovative model for delta management, where farmers, fishers, and policymakers work together. By combining Dutch technology with Bangladesh’s capabilities, this initiative will open new horizons for sustainable development and adaptation strategies in delta regions.”
Also present at the event were Professor Dr. S. M. Hemayet Jahan, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, and Professor Dr. Kamrul Hasan of PUST. The guests expressed their hope that the ADM-LAB project will open new frontiers in climate adaptation and sustainable development in delta regions, marking a significant milestone in Bangladesh’s development journey.
