Thakurgaon, Bangladesh: In response to a petition by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), the court has ordered the seizure and freezing of assets and bank accounts belonging to former Thakurgaon-2 Member of Parliament, Alhaj Md. Dabirul Islam.
The directive was issued on Sunday, 21 September, by Judge Md. Jamal Hossain of the Thakurgaon Senior Special Judge Court, confirmed Azmir Sharif Marzi, Assistant Director of the ACC’s Thakurgaon District Office.
Earlier, on 11 September, ACC’s Assistant Director and Investigating Officer Md. Imran Hossain filed an application with the court seeking the confiscation of the former MP’s assets.
The ACC petition alleges that Alhaj Md. Dabirul Islam amassed wealth through abuse of power, various irregularities, and extensive corruption, acquiring assets in his own name and in the names of family members far beyond his known sources of income. An ACC investigation team found that his unexplained assets totaled BDT 14,866,661, which is inconsistent with his declared income.
Following the investigation, the ACC sought court permission to seize both movable and immovable assets of the former MP. The court granted this request to prevent the transfer, sale, or disposal of these properties.
Alhaj Md. Dabirul Islam is currently facing multiple cases, including murder and extortion, and is being held at the Dinajpur District Jail. He has been granted bail in several of these cases. Reliable sources indicate that he has attempted to sell or transfer assets under his name while out on bail.
The ACC emphasized that if the seizure is not enforced, there is a significant risk that the assets could be transferred, sold, or lost. Therefore, immediate court action was necessary to secure them.
Azmir Sharif Marzi confirmed that following the ACC’s petition, the court has now officially ordered the seizure of the former MP’s assets.
Notably, after the July public uprising, multiple cases were filed against Dabirul Islam, including murder and extortion. On 2 October last year, he was arrested from the residence of Alamgir Hossain, a local Awami League leader in Ruhia, Thakurgaon Sadar, in connection with an extortion case filed by BNP leader Habibur Rahman Bablu.
Dabirul Islam first became an MP in 1986 and subsequently served seven consecutive terms representing Thakurgaon-2, most recently until the 11th National Parliament in 2018.
