BGB Member Dies, 4 Injured by Lightning Strike While Patrolling at Kurigram Border

Kurigram Correspondent: A Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) member died after being struck by lightning while on patrol at the Roumari border in Kurigram. Four others were injured in the incident, which occurred around 1:00 AM on Wednesday night (May 14) at the Kauniarchar-Khetarchar border area in Dantbhanga Union of Roumari Upazila.

The deceased BGB member was identified as Riyad Hossain (32), a sepoy of the Dantbhanga BOP under Jamalpur 35 BGB Battalion.

The injured are: Havildar Md. Jasim (52), Sepoy Nadim (28), Sepoy Shaheen (28), and Ansar member Ferdous Hossain (36).

According to BGB sources, a BGB patrol team was on duty near the international main border pillar no. 1054 at the Kauniarchar-Khetarchar border when it began to rain. During the rain, a lightning strike severely injured four BGB personnel and one Ansar member. They were immediately rescued and taken to Roumari Hospital, where Riyad Hossain was declared dead. Two of the seriously injured BGB members were later transferred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, while the other two are receiving treatment at Roumari Upazila Health Complex.

Dr. Nabiul Islam, the Residential Medical Officer (RMO) of Roumari Upazila Health Complex, said that one BGB member was brought in dead following the lightning strike. As the condition of two others deteriorated, they were referred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. The remaining injured are being treated locally.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Roumari Police Station, Md. Lutfor Rahman, confirmed that one BGB member died and four others were injured due to a lightning strike while patrolling the border. All the injured are currently under treatment at different hospitals.
