Economy Desk: Describing Chattogram Port as the “lifeline of Bangladesh’s economy,” Chief Adviser to the Interim Government, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, has stressed the importance of integrating this vital asset with neighboring countries to maximize its potential.
Highlighting the strategic significance of the port, Dr. Yunus remarked, “If this heart weakens, no doctor can restore it. We must elevate it to international standards and connect it with our neighbors.” Referring specifically to Nepal and India’s Seven Sister states in the northeast, he added, “If they are connected, both sides will benefit. Those who don’t join will inevitably fall behind.”
Dr. Yunus made these remarks on Wednesday during his visit to the New Mooring Container Terminal in Chattogram, his first official engagement in the port city. He was briefed on the port's capacity and ongoing developments during the session.
He stated that the interim government has taken various initiatives to transform Chattogram Port into a world-class facility by inviting globally reputed port management firms to collaborate.
“To transform Bangladesh’s economy, our hope lies in Chattogram Port. There is no alternative,” he asserted.
Dr. Yunus also expressed concern over Bangladesh lagging behind in global advancements, stating, “The world has moved far ahead, while we’ve remained stagnant. We are no longer taken seriously. That’s why I’m pushing for change. I’ve proposed handing over port operations to top international operators. I believe, in time, everyone will understand the necessity of this step.”
