Murder case filed against two former AL MPs in Rangpur after a decade

Rangpur Bureau:  Aftab Uddin, the father of the deceased, has filed a case against 224 Awami League members and 50 to 70 unidentified people, seeking justice for the murder of Shibir leader Ashikur Rahman after an era (12 years) in Rangpur.

The case was filed by the father of the deceased at Mithapukur Police Station in Rangpur on March 8. The plaintiff is demanding justice. He has been deprived of justice for 12 years.

Mithapukur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abu Bakkar Siddique confirmed the case on Tuesday (March 11) night. The deceased was identified as Ashiqur Rahman, son of Md. Aftab Uddin of Imadpur village in Mithapukur upazila.

The OC gave this information on Wednesday (March 12) afternoon. He said that the father of the deceased is filing this murder case after a long time. Efforts are being made to arrest the accused in the case.

According to the case source, on February 28, 2013, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami called a morning and evening strike to protest the death sentence against Jamaat's Naib-e-Ameer Delwar Hossain Sayedi. In support of the strike, leaders and activists of Mithapukur Jamaat and Chhatra Shibir took a peaceful stand at the Upazila Jamaat office.

At that time, the police, RAB, BGB and leaders and activists of Awami League, Chhatra League, Swechchhasebak League, Sramik League, Jubo League attacked on the orders of HN Ashiqur Rahman. At one stage of the attack, a young man named Ashiqur Rahman was shot and fell to his death on the highway. At least 50/60 leaders and activists of Jamaat Shibir were seriously injured. The injured were admitted to Mithapukur Upazila Health Center. Later, the seriously injured were admitted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for advanced medical care.

In the case, the plaintiff mentioned that when she went to file a case at Mithapukur Police Station, the fascist Awami League government was in power and was mentally disturbed due to the grief of losing her child, the police station refused to accept the case. Due to which, the case was delayed. The case was filed after 12 years.

Six months after the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, Aftab Uddin, the deceased's father, filed a case seeking justice for his son's murder, naming 224 Awami League leaders and 50 to 70 unknown people. In the case, Awami League central treasurer HN Ashiqur Rahman was accused number 1, his son Rashek Rahman, the leader of the Awami League sub-committee, was accused number 2, and Upazila Awami League general secretary and former MP Zakir Hossain Sarkar was accused number 3, naming 224 leaders and activists of the Upazila Awami League, Chhatra League, Jubo League, Swechchhasebak League, and Shramik League, along with 50 to 70 other people.

In this regard, Mithapukur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abu Bakkar Siddique said, "A murder case has been filed at the police station. The case is being investigated. Necessary measures are being taken in this regard. However, efforts are underway to arrest the accused. The accused will be brought to justice as soon as possible."
