Female students hold torchlight procession to protest rape at BKU

Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh: More than a hundred female students of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAKU) have organized a torch procession to protest against the ongoing rape and violence against women across the country and demand the maximum punishment for the culprits.

On Monday (March 10), students gathered at the university's KR Market premises at 7:30 pm. Later, a torch-bearing protest march took off from there, passed through Jabbar intersection and ended at the KR Market area. During this, they raised various slogans and called for strict action against rape.

Sidratul Muntaha, a second-year student of the Faculty of Agricultural Economics at BKU, said, "Incidents of rape and violence against women are increasing in the country, but the perpetrators are not being properly punished. Two women or children are being raped every 9 hours, which does not give us the opportunity to sit in our rooms. Our movement will continue until the rapists are brought to justice."

Pushpita Bhattacharya, a fourth-year student, expressed her anger and said, "The government has failed to take effective action in the rape incident. We are not seeing any effective action from the Home Affairs Advisor either. He should resign immediately. Ensuring a safe state for women is the most important thing now."

Through such movements, students want to create awareness in society and demand strict legal action against rape.
