Environmentalist organization 'Green Campus' has formed a human chain to protest the cutting of trees in the Charudwip area of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam University.
Students and members of various environmental organizations participated in the program held in front of the Nazrul Sculpture on Sunday (March 9) at 11:30 am.
The students in the human chain complained that the university's planning department had decided to cut down 20 to 25-year-old plum, jackfruit and palm trees in the Charudwip area. Even the roots of some trees were hit with excavators, which is putting them at risk of dying. The students said, "Charudwip is one of the places of natural beauty on the campus. Government money is being wasted in the name of unnecessary road construction here and it is having a negative impact on the environment."
Green Campus President Sajan Chandra Par said, "It takes 20-25 years for a tree to fully develop. However, the administration's decision to cut them down within a few moments, no alternative measures were taken. We want an environmentally friendly plan to be adopted and new trees to be planted quickly as appropriate compensation."
The organization's general secretary, Mustafa Kamal, said, "Deforestation and waste of government money in the name of unplanned development projects is in no way acceptable. The university administration must immediately take effective action in this regard."
After the human chain, the protesters submitted a memorandum to the Vice Chancellor and warned of bigger programs in the future. In the memorandum, they raised five demands.
The university administration must explain the reasons for the deforestation in Charudwip, where the wood from the felled trees was taken, and why there was an attempt to destroy the evidence.
No unreasonable tree cutting will be allowed on campus in the future, and those responsible for the trees that have already been cut down must be held accountable.
To build an environmentally friendly campus, measures must be taken to control dust during road construction, and where RCC has been constructed, bitumen should be quickly applied.
Adequate dustbins must be installed to maintain the cleanliness of the campus and effective measures must be taken to reduce mosquito infestation.
The contractual appointment of Engineer Md. Hafizur Rahman, Director of the Planning, Development and Works Department, should be cancelled because questions have been raised about his work management skills.
University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Jahangir Alam said, "The work on this project started before I took charge. Sometimes such mistakes are made due to the ignorance of the laborers. I have talked to them, they have admitted their mistakes. I will try to ensure that such mistakes do not happen again in the future."
Regarding the appointment of DPD Hafizur Rahman, he said, "A notification has been issued for the appointment of a new DPD. If someone qualified is found, he will be appointed. However, for now, he is the only one who knows well about the ongoing projects on the campus."
