Hearing of appeal against Khaleda Zia's acquittal scheduled for tomorrow

News Desk:  The hearing of the appeal of the state and the ACC against the verdict acquitting BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia from a 7-year sentence in the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case has been set for tomorrow, Monday (March 3).

A three-judge appeal bench led by Justice Md. Ashfaqul Islam passed the order on Sunday (March 2). The court passed the order following an application by the ACC lawyer.  

Lawyer Asif Hossain represented the ACC in court today. On the other hand, lawyers Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajal, Advocate Aminul Islam, Advocate Zakir Hossain and Advocate Maqsud Ullah represented Khaleda Zia.

Earlier, on February 23, the state and the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) appealed to the Appellate Division against the verdict acquitting BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia from a 7-year sentence in the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case.

Earlier, on November 27, the High Court acquitted BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia from a seven-year sentence in the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case. The High Court bench of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain gave the verdict on Wednesday, accepting Khaleda Zia's appeal against the sentence.

The appeal hearing against the seven-year prison sentence given to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case began on November 20. On November 3, the High Court allowed the court to prepare a paperback at its own expense for the appeal hearing against the seven-year prison sentence given to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case.

In October 2018, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia was sentenced to seven years in prison in the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case. The court also sentenced three other defendants to seven years in prison. Khaleda Zia and each of them were fined Tk 1 million. In addition, 42 kathas of land in Kakrail bought in the name of the trust were ordered to be confiscated and transferred to the state. Khaleda Zia later appealed against the verdict.
