Renaming of establishment in Jakkanib named after Sheikh family

JakkanEB Correspondent: The names of two residential halls and Bangabandhu Square named after the Sheikh family at the National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam University in Trishal, Mymensingh have been changed.

On Saturday (March 1), the university's Acting Registrar Professor Dr. Md. Mizanur Rahman said that the decision was taken at the 88th syndicate meeting held on February 28.

As per the decision of the syndicate meeting, the name of the 'Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman' Hall for male students has been changed to 'Bidrohi' Hall and the name of the 'Bangamata Begum Fazilatunnesa Mujib' Hall for female students has been changed to 'Shiulimala' Hall. Besides, Bangabandhu Square has been renamed 'July-24 Square'. 

Meanwhile, there is dissatisfaction among many students as the names of the central playground, a children's park, and Bangabandhu Square at the central library remain unchanged after Sheikh Russell. 

It is worth noting that after the fall of the government on August 5 last year, protesters demolished the statue of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the nameplate of Sheikh Mujib Hall at the university's Bangabandhu Square. On February 5, the nameplate and mural of Begum Faziltunnesa Mujib Hall were demolished. Since then, students have been demanding that the residential halls and various establishments named after the Sheikh family be renamed.
