Terrible disaster in the United States, 67 thousand people lost their homes

International Desk: A devastating wildfire in the U.S. state of Washington has burned more than 10,500 acres of land. More than 1,500 firefighters have been deployed to contain the blaze. So far, nearly 850 homes, businesses, and other structures have been damaged or destroyed, while approximately 67,000 people have been displaced.

The information was reported by NBC News on Thursday (6 August).

According to the report, more than 1,500 firefighters from 24 U.S. states have joined the firefighting efforts. The wildfire, which began last Saturday, has already caused extensive damage to residential properties, commercial establishments, and other infrastructure.

Authorities have warned that temperatures are expected to rise further over the coming days, with no rainfall forecast. However, firefighters have significantly strengthened containment lines, limiting the fire's spread to only two additional acres since Monday.

Tom Stokesberry, spokesperson for the California Interagency Incident Management Team, which is leading the emergency response, said that substantial progress has been made in containing the wildfire. He confirmed that around 67,000 residents have been evacuated to safe locations and that no fatalities have been reported so far.

Stokesberry added, "If our containment lines hold through the weekend, we expect the fire will not spread any further. However, it will take considerable time before the overall situation returns to normal."

As of Wednesday, the Old Trails and Autumn Lane wildfires were each 13 percent contained, while the Fairview Fire had reached 5 percent containment. Combined, the three wildfires have burned 10,546 acres of land.

Stokesberry said firefighters are now carrying out "search and destroy" operations, with specialized Hotshot crews identifying and extinguishing remaining hotspots to prevent the fires from reigniting. He noted that these crews are working 16-hour shifts each day and getting only five to seven hours of sleep.

Michael Kelly, spokesperson for the Washington State Department of Natural Resources, said that with more than 800 structures damaged, the wildfire is likely to rank among the most destructive in the state's history. By comparison, the Gray and Oregon Road wildfires near Spokane in 2023 destroyed around 350 structures. The current disaster has already exceeded that level of destruction.
