1,969 registered mass media in the country: Information Minister

News Desk: Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan has stated that there are currently a total of 1,969 registered media outlets in the country.

He provided this information today in Parliament while responding to a question tabled by Dewan Mohammad Salahuddin, a ruling party member representing the Dhaka-19 constituency.

Presenting detailed statistics on the country’s media sector, the minister said that Bangladesh currently has 59 television channels, including 4 state-owned channels and 55 privately owned channels that have received no-objection approval. However, only 39 channels, including the 4 state-owned ones, are currently in operation and broadcasting.

Regarding daily newspapers, he said that 1,436 daily newspapers are currently being published across the country. Of these, 593 are published from the capital city, while 843 are published from other districts.

The minister also noted that there are currently 474 registered online news portals in the country. Among them, 282 fall under the general online news portal category, 131 are online news portals operated by daily newspapers, and 61 are categorized as regional online news portals.
