News Desk: A highly publicized court case that could influence the future of artificial intelligence has begun its judicial proceedings today (Tuesday). The case involves a legal battle between two billionaires—Elon Musk and Sam Altman—over the evolution of OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT.
After a preliminary selection of nine jurors on Monday, initial hearings of Musk’s civil lawsuit began today at a federal court in Oakland, California.
Musk alleges that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and President Greg Brockman betrayed both him and the public. He claims that the organization has deviated from its original mission of working for the benefit of humanity and has instead become a “profit-generating machine” for itself and its investors.
The world’s richest man, Elon Musk, is seeking $150 billion in damages from OpenAI and one of its major investors, Microsoft. He wants the compensation to be directed to OpenAI’s charitable arm. Additionally, he is demanding that OpenAI be restored to its nonprofit status and that Altman and Brockman be removed from their positions.
Musk, the founder of Tesla and SpaceX, stated that he initially provided $38 million in funding to help establish OpenAI. However, after he left the board in 2018, the organization shifted to a for-profit model in 2019.
OpenAI, on the other hand, claims that Musk was aware of and had supported these changes in advance. The company further argues that Musk is now acting out of frustration after failing to become CEO and is attempting to boost his own AI venture, xAI, through the lawsuit.
