Diplomatic Correspondent: The High Commission of India in Bangladesh hosted a reception in Dhaka on Friday to mark the 77th Republic Day of India, reaffirming the enduring friendship and multifaceted partnership between the two neighbouring countries.
The event was attended by senior officials of the Government of Bangladesh, members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of international organisations, business leaders, cultural figures, and members of civil society, reflecting the depth and diversity of India–Bangladesh relations.

Speaking on the occasion, Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma highlighted the significance of India’s Republic Day as a historic moment when the people of a newly independent nation adopted a Constitution anchored in the ideals of justice, liberty, equality, and dignity for all. He noted that over the past 76 years, India has emerged as the world’s largest democracy and one of the leading global economies, contributing constructively to regional and global progress.

Referring to Bangladesh as an “important co-traveller” in India’s journey, the High Commissioner recalled the shared history of sacrifice during Bangladesh’s Liberation War of 1971, which continues to form the moral foundation of bilateral ties. He emphasised that the relationship between the two countries goes beyond formal diplomacy, being deeply rooted in shared culture, language, literature, music, and artistic traditions inspired by figures such as Rabindranath Tagore and Kazi Nazrul Islam.

Highlighting growing connectivity and economic cooperation, the High Commissioner pointed to landmark initiatives in energy and infrastructure, including cross-border power transmission lines, regional energy trade, and a cross-border diesel pipeline linking India and Bangladesh. These initiatives, he said, have strengthened regional integration while supporting key sectors of Bangladesh’s economy, including ready-made garments and pharmaceuticals.

Looking ahead, the High Commissioner underlined the need for future-ready collaborations driven by trust, innovation, technology, and mutual benefit. He expressed confidence that, as two fast-growing economies powered by young and skilled populations, India and Bangladesh can serve as catalysts for each other’s sustainable growth and play a stabilising role in regional integration.

The reception also underscored shared commitments to clean and secure energy, climate resilience, environmental sustainability, and the development of regional value chains and digital ecosystems.

As the programme concluded, the Indian High Commission reaffirmed India’s continued support for a democratic, stable, peaceful, progressive, and inclusive Bangladesh, while extending warm wishes for peace, prosperity, and success to the people of Bangladesh.
