Diplomatic Correspondent: The Embassy Football Fest 2025 commenced in Dhaka in a vibrant and festive atmosphere, marking a unique celebration of sports diplomacy. With the participation of diplomatic missions and international organizations, the opening day concluded successfully, reflecting enthusiasm, competitive spirit, and a strong message of unity through sports.
A total of 24 embassies and international organizations took part in the tournament, with group-stage matches held simultaneously on two grounds, making the opening day lively and engaging.
The tournament was formally inaugurated on Friday morning at the APBn Ground in Uttara by Dr. Md. Nazrul Islam, Secretary (East and West) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. On the occasion, the Ambassadors of Italy, the Philippines, and Pakistan, along with the Deputy High Commissioner of Palestine, jointly unveiled the tournament trophy. The inauguration ceremony was also attended by the World Bank Country Director, the United Nations Resident Coordinator, and representatives of all participating teams.
The sixth edition of the Embassy Football Fest is being hosted in partnership with the Armed Police Battalion (APBn). In his welcome address, Additional Inspector General of APBn, Md. Fakir Ali, expressed pride in hosting the event, stating that bringing together diplomatic missions from various countries on their grounds was a matter of great honor. He emphasized that fostering friendship through sports remains the core objective of the festival.
During the event, Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) Vice President Fahad Karim welcomed the initiative, describing it as an important and positive step by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in promoting diplomatic engagement through sports.
The Embassy Football Fest 2025 is organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with GamePlay Limited serving as the event’s overall management partner for the sixth consecutive time.
The tournament’s title sponsor is Saudia Airlines. Announcing an incentive for participants, Saudia Airlines’ Country Manager, Mr. Salman A. Al Alali, stated that the tournament’s best player will be awarded a Dhaka–Saudi Arabia–Dhaka return air ticket.
The 24 participating teams, divided into eight groups, completed all their group-stage matches on the opening day. The opening match of the tournament was played between Bangladesh and IOM, while the final match of the day featured Malaysia against Algeria.
Following the group stage, 16 teams have advanced to the knockout phase. The Round of Sixteen, quarterfinals, semifinals, and final will be held on Saturday, January 24, culminating in the crowning of the tournament champion.
