How to Clean Germs From Your Mobile Phone

Information Technology Desk: Nowadays, washing hands, using sanitizer on shopping trolleys, or wiping down cafe tables has become part of our daily habits. But have we ever thought—what is the most touched object in a day?

That is our smartphone. Whether it is the kitchen, dining table, office desk, or bathroom—the phone is with us everywhere. We place our fingers on the screen repeatedly throughout the day, bring it close to our faces, and hand it to others. However, we do not keep our phones as clean as our hands.

Researchers state that hundreds of species of bacteria and viruses can reside on a phone. Not all germs cause illness, but the risk of infection is not zero. We use phones in the bathroom, then bring them close to our mouths or touch them while eating. Without regular cleaning, the phone gradually becomes a "hotspot" for germs.

However, cleaning it incorrectly can also cause damage. Many people use hand sanitizer, glass cleaner, or harsh cleaning agents. But major tech companies like Apple and Samsung have clearly stated—bleach, vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, ammonia, acetone, or alcohol higher than 70% should not be used. This is because the oleophobic coating on the phone screen can be damaged, scratches may appear, touch sensitivity could decrease, and the waterproof seal might weaken.

To clean the phone safely:

• Use isopropyl alcohol wipes.

• Use a soft microfiber cloth.

• Use a soft anti-static brush to clean the speakers or charging port.

Some precautions:

• Do not spray liquid directly onto the phone.

• Do not submerge the phone.

• Do not use tissues, paper, or rough cloth.

• Do not scrub or clean excessively.

For general use, cleaning the phone at least once a week is sufficient. However, if the phone is used frequently in public transport, hospitals, gyms, or bathrooms, it should be cleaned more often.
