International Desk:
Facing nearly a week of bloody clashes along the Cambodia border and internal political instability, Thailand’s Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has dissolved the parliament. Following this announcement, a general election will be held in the country within 45 to 60 days.
In a royal decree published on Friday (12 December), Anutin stated that the deadly border tensions and other political crises had become difficult for his minority government to manage. He described his decision as a way to return political power to the people.
Businessman-politician Anutin Charnvirakul has been Thailand’s third prime minister since August 2023. Upon taking office, he had announced that the parliament would be dissolved at the end of January. However, facing a vote of no confidence, he called for elections earlier than scheduled.
In the royal decree, Anutin wrote that the instability of the minority government has become a major obstacle to effective administration. Continuity, efficiency, and stability are required to run the country, which is not possible under the current circumstances.
Anutin made the decision to dissolve parliament primarily after losing the support of the young and progressive People’s Party. In response to the call for dissolution, the People’s Party stated in a release: “See you at the polling stations.”
According to Thai media, the People’s Party was preparing to submit a no-confidence motion against the government on Friday.
Over the past year, Thailand has faced intense political crises, during which two prime ministers were removed by court rulings.
