Lalmonirhat Correspondent: During an anti-smuggling operation along the border, the Lalmonirhat Battalion (15 BGB) seized a large consignment of illegal Indian gold-katan sarees from the Bhurungamari border area of Kurigram. The total assessed value of the seized sarees is BDT 27,20,000.
On Thursday (11 December) afternoon, Battalion Commander Lieutenant Colonel Mehedi Imam, PSC, confirmed the operation to reporters at the 15 BGB camp. The raid was carried out earlier, around 12:50 a.m. Wednesday, in the Purbo Votahat area of Bhurungamari Upazila’s Bagbhandar BOP, based on reliable intelligence.
BGB had previously learned that smugglers were attempting to illegally transport a large shipment of Indian gold-katan sarees into Bangladesh. Acting on this confidential information, BGB patrols strategically positioned themselves in the border area.
Around 12:30 a.m., the patrol spotted several suspicious individuals with goods and challenged them. Seeing the BGB personnel, the smugglers abandoned the bags and fled back into India.
A search of the area recovered a total of 272 Indian gold-katan sarees. The 15 BGB Battalion assessed the total value at BDT 27,20,000.
Lieutenant Colonel Mehedi Imam, PSC, stated that the BGB maintains a zero-tolerance policy against cross-border smuggling. Surveillance and regular patrolling along border areas have been strengthened. The seized sarees will be processed according to legal procedures and later handed over to the Customs Department.
