How much gold is in the reserves of each country, and what is Bangladesh’s position?

News Desk: Despite global economic instability, inflation, and geopolitical crises, gold continues to hold its importance as a safe asset. Central banks worldwide have long emphasized gold as a major part of their reserves. According to the latest data from the World Gold Council and various international financial institutions, the United States holds the largest gold reserve in the world.

The data shows that the U.S. possesses 8,133.46 tonnes of gold, which exceeds the combined reserves of the second and third-ranked countries. Among the top six countries are Germany (3,355.14 tonnes), Italy (2,436.99 tonnes), France (2,436.38 tonnes), Russia (2,332.70 tonnes), and China (2,279.6 tonnes). Notably, between 2019 and 2024, China alone added 331 tonnes of gold to its reserves.

Other significant countries include India (876.2 tonnes), Japan (846 tonnes), Turkey (595.4 tonnes), and Saudi Arabia (323.1 tonnes). Much of the gold in these countries’ reserves dates back to the Bretton Woods era, from 1940 to 1970.

Bangladesh Bank’s reserves contain only 14.8 tonnes of gold, which is comparatively very low on the global scale. However, it remains an important financial asset for the country, helping maintain confidence in international trade and financial stability.

Even amid global economic risks and uncertainty, central banks continue to hold gold as one of their key reserve assets due to its stability in value.
