Rangpur Bureau: The 109th founding anniversary of the historic Carmichael College, renowned as the “Oxford of the North,” was celebrated with a festive atmosphere. The century-old institution’s campus came alive with a variety of two-day events marking the milestone.
The main program commenced on Monday (November 10) morning at the historic college grounds in Rangpur, with balloons and pigeons released to formally inaugurate the celebrations.
The chief guest at the opening ceremony was the college’s former principal, Professor Dr. Muhammad Rezaul Haq. He remarked, “Carmichael College is not just an educational institution; it is a symbol of identity for the people of northern Bangladesh. For over a century, this institution has contributed to the realms of education, culture, and thought.”
Following the inauguration, a vibrant procession took place with students, teachers, alumni, and local dignitaries participating. The procession started from the college’s main gate, circled the campus, and concluded at the Shaheed Minar. Colorful banners, festoons, and balloons spread festive cheer throughout the campus.
The two-day celebration also served as a reunion for alumni, filling the campus with youthful enthusiasm and pride in the institution’s heritage, making it a memorable event in Carmichael College’s history.
Present at the events were Professor Shamima Akhtar, Principal of Rangpur Government College; Professor Mostafizur Rahman, Principal of Carmichael College; vice principals; heads of various departments; teachers; students; parents; and alumni.
Principal Professor Mostafizur Rahman said, “Since its establishment, Carmichael College has illuminated education in northern Bangladesh. We aim to further advance the institution by integrating modern educational technologies with humanistic values.”
The two-day celebration included a youth fair, debate competitions, blood donation drives, an art exhibition, and cultural programs. The first day concluded with the “Youth Fair,” showcasing creative works from different departments and clubs. In the evening, musical, dance, and theatrical performances were held on the college’s open stage, enjoyed by hundreds of students, parents, and local spectators.
Professor Shamima Akhtar stated, “Carmichael College is the educational hub of northern Bangladesh. The intellect and creativity of its teachers and students contribute to the nation’s development. Preserving this heritage for future generations is our responsibility.”
Students expressed that the lively celebrations added new joy and inspiration to their campus life. One student said, “We are proud to be part of this institution. The college’s history motivates us.”
Chief guest Professor Dr. Rezaul Haq added, “The students of this college do not merely acquire knowledge; they shape themselves as symbols of social change, humanity, and ethics. The new generation must uphold this legacy and move forward.”
Founded in 1916 during British rule, Carmichael College was named after Lord Thomas David Baron Carmichael, the then Governor of Bengal. The institution has witnessed historic events including the Partition of India, the Independence Movement, and the Liberation War, and for over a century has remained a beacon of education in northern Bangladesh.
