DU Canteens, Shops Fined by Hall VP-GS, Proctor Comments

The newly elected General Secretary (GS) of Jahurul Haque Hall at Dhaka University (DU), Khaled Hasan, has fined the tin-shed canteen 1,000 taka for possessing testing salt.

During a routine inspection of the hall canteen on Sunday, Khaled Hasan noticed the presence of testing salt. He subsequently issued a notice to the canteen owner imposing a 1,000-taka fine. The notice also stated that the fine must be paid and a report submitted to the hall administration within three days.

Following the incident, Khaled Hasan posted on his Facebook page that the canteen owner, Mostafa Bhai, must pay the 1,000-taka fine and submit a report to the hall council within three working days for having harmful testing salt in his shop.

Earlier, a similar incident occurred at Surya Sen Hall, where newly elected VP Azizul Haque fined a shop 3,000 taka after finding 1 kg of testing salt. A contract was signed with the shopkeeper last Friday confirming the fine. According to the contract, the owner of Shop No. 8 was fined 3,000 taka, and if the fine is not paid within three days, the hall office will recommend canceling the shop’s contract. The hall office will collect the fine.

VP Azizul Haque explained that initially, when they asked about the use of testing salt in food, the shopkeeper denied it. However, upon inspecting the shop, they found 1 kg of testing salt in a plastic bag, at which point the shopkeeper admitted to using it in food.

When asked about such actions by hall council leaders, DU Proctor Professor Saifuddin Ahmed stated that the council members cannot impose fines on their own as it is beyond their authority. Any such action must go through hall administration. “As hall representatives, their responsibility is to work for the welfare of students, but they must coordinate with the administration,” he said.
