JAKSU Results to Be Announced in the Evening, Says Chief Election Commissioner

News Desk: Although vote counting for the Jahangirnagar University Central Students' Union (JAKSU) and hall union elections was completed at noon, the results will be announced at 7 PM in the evening. This information was provided by JAKSU Chief Election Commissioner Professor Md. Moniuzzaman on Saturday (September 13) afternoon.

Meanwhile, Election Commission Member Secretary Professor Dr. A.K.M. Rashedul Alam said that since elections are being held after 33 years, more time is being taken to ensure no questionable circumstances arise.

Vote counting for the central union has been completed in 18 out of 21 halls. Counting is ongoing in the remaining 3 halls. Students and candidates have expressed frustration over the delay in result announcement.

Earlier, University Vice-Chancellor Dr. Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan held an urgent meeting with the election commission. It was decided to increase manpower and announce results by night. However, counting was not completed even after the night passed and morning arrived.

Meanwhile, Election Commission member Professor Mafruhi Sattar has resigned citing allegations of irregularities. He is a Professor in the Pharmacy Department and President of the Nationalist Teachers' Forum JU branch. He said, "A level playing field was not ensured in the election, various irregularities occurred. Many complaints have been raised. I was pressured in various ways not to resign. There was pressure on me since yesterday, but I am still resigning. If I don't resign now and speak about irregularities later, questions will be raised about why I didn't resign."

However, Ferdous Al Hasan, AGS candidate of the Integrated Students' Alliance supported by Islami Chhatra Shibir, has raised complaints against this decision. He said, "An election commission member has resigned to question the JAKSU election."

Addressing the resigned commissioner, he further said that he has fled with his tail between his legs from the battlefield. This candidate alleged that he resigned because he could not implement the vile conspiracy he had regarding the election.

The JAKSU and hall union elections were held last Thursday. In this election, there were a total of 11,743 voters. Approximately 67 to 68 percent votes were cast.

Although vote counting began around 10:15 PM that day, it suddenly stopped on Friday evening. Later, vote counting resumed using the manual method. The number of polling officers for counting has since been increased.
