Vote counting will not be completed in three days: Returning Officer Sultana

Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) election faced a setback as Sultana Akter, Returning Officer of Nawab Faizunnesa Hall, announced her withdrawal from the vote-counting process.

At a press conference in front of the JUCSU Election Commission office on Friday (September 12) at 5 pm, she declared her boycott, alleging that the manual counting system would take an unreasonable amount of time.

“Even in three days, the vote count will not be completed if we continue with the analog method,” she said.

Blaming the administration for the death of her colleague, Fine Arts faculty member Jannatul Ferdous, Sultana added:
“If machine-based counting was in place, perhaps we would not have lost our colleague. For the last three days, we have been working under inhuman pressure. Don’t we have families? Don’t we feel physical and mental exhaustion?”

She further stated that the death of the Fine Arts teacher had left many of her colleagues devastated, including returning and polling officers. “How can they continue their duties in this state? We are teachers, and we cannot accept such a situation anymore,” she said.

Meanwhile, vote counting for the JUCSU and hall union elections continued at the university’s Senate Building after Friday prayers. According to the latest update, results for 19 out of 21 hall unions have been completed, with three still pending.

JUCSU Election Commission member Dr. Lutful Elahi said:
“We are working at full pace. Only three hall union counts are left. Once they are finished, we will begin JUCSU vote counting. We have already increased the number of counting tables to speed up the process.”
