International Desk: During his upcoming visit to Saudi Arabia in mid-May, U.S. President Donald Trump will participate in a high-level summit with leaders of the Gulf region. The news was confirmed on Saturday by a senior American official and two senior Arab officials.
This will be Trump’s first official foreign trip since taking office in January. The visit highlights the Trump administration’s focus on strengthening economic ties and exploring investment opportunities with Gulf countries.
Officials stated that the summit will help Trump outline his regional strategy and define the scope of U.S. engagement in the Middle East.
According to reports, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman will invite leaders of the six-member Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) to join the summit with Trump. Besides Saudi Arabia, the other five GCC countries are the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, and Qatar.
Ahead of the summit, Trump is expected to arrive in Saudi Arabia on May 13 for bilateral meetings. The summit is scheduled to take place on the morning of May 14. No other Arab leaders are currently expected to join the meeting, although that may change, according to one Arab official.
Following the summit, Trump is expected to travel to Doha for a meeting with Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. He will then visit Abu Dhabi on May 15 to meet with UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed.
The White House has stated that a full itinerary of Trump’s Middle East visit will be released soon.
