Diplomatic Correspondent: The Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre (IGCC) of the High Commission of India in Dhaka organised ‘Lalon Sandhya 2026’ at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium on Saturday, celebrating the life, philosophy and timeless musical legacy of legendary Baul mystic and songwriter Fakir Lalon Shah.
‎
‎The cultural evening brought together traditional Baul music, flute melodies, chorus performances of Lalon Geeti and contemporary musical interpretations, highlighting Bengal’s rich cultural heritage and the enduring influence of Lalon Shah’s philosophy. More than 700 guests attended the programme, filling the auditorium to capacity.
‎
‎Addressing the audience, Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh H.E. Dinesh Trivedi described Fakir Lalon Shah as a “lighthouse of humanity”, drawing an analogy with a ship lost at sea that looks towards a lighthouse for direction.
‎
‎Highlighting Lalon Shah’s philosophy of universal humanity and inclusiveness, the High Commissioner said that Lalon Shah also serves as a bridge of friendship between India and Bangladesh. He emphasised the continued relevance of Lalon’s teachings, particularly their message of humanity and transcendence of social and religious divisions.
‎
‎He also underscored the importance of the Baul tradition in preserving Bengal’s shared cultural heritage and highlighted the role of cultural exchanges in strengthening people-to-people connections between the two neighbouring countries.
‎
‎The programme opened with traditional Baul music performed by a Bangladeshi Baul group led by renowned folk musician Shafi Mondal, whose soulful renditions reflected the spiritual depth and mystic traditions of Fakir Lalon Shah.
‎
‎This was followed by a flute recital by Gazi Abdul Hakim, husband of legendary folk singer and ‘Queen of Lalon Sangeet’ the late Farida Parveen, accompanied by renowned folk and traditional singer Nasrin Akther Beauty. Their performances blended classical ragas with Bengali folk melodies, creating a captivating musical experience.
‎
‎Students of Ocin Pakhi Cultural Academy subsequently presented a chorus rendition of Lalon Geeti, bringing together the timeless compositions of Lalon Shah and celebrating their continued relevance in contemporary society.
‎
‎The evening's highlight was a vibrant performance by internationally renowned musical group Band Lalon, led by Nigar Sultana Sumi. Blending traditional Lalon Geeti with contemporary musical arrangements, the group captivated the audience with its distinctive musical style and energetic stage presence, demonstrating how Lalon’s compositions continue to inspire younger generations.
‎
‎The programme was attended by Minister of State for Housing and Public Works H.E. Ahammad Sohel Monzoor, MP, Members of Parliament, senior government officials, former ambassadors, eminent artists, business leaders, academics, representatives of think tanks, editors, media representatives, students, teachers and cultural enthusiasts.
‎
‎Young participants, including former Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) scholars, also took part in the event.
