Economy Desk: Director General (DG) of National Consumer Protection Directorate (DG) Mohammad Alim Akhtar Khan said that even though Dhaka has expanded, Tejgaon and Kaptanbazar have remained stagnant since independence. For the convenience of consumers, an initiative has been taken to sell eggs directly at 6 sub-centres in Dhaka North City Corporation and 7 sub-centres in South City Corporation from tomorrow.
He said this on Saturday (November 9) at the Debate for Democracy organized by the Shadow Parliament at FDC in the capital. Chairman of Debate House Democracy Hasan Ahmed Chowdhury Kiran presided over it.
Mohammad Alim Akhtar Khan said that necessary measures are being taken to control the prices of daily commodities during Ramadan. The government has already withdrawn the duty on some goods. LC is deciding to raise the margin on import of essential commodities during fasting including edible oil, sugar, gram, pulses, dates. It will be possible to control the prices of daily commodities during fasting.
The Director General of Consumer Rights Protection also said that marginal farmers are allegedly being oppressed due to contract farming. Initiatives are being taken to make production and marketing easier by freeing farmers from the culture of buying chicks, feed and vaccines from corporate institutions. Hopefully, through this, consumers and farmers will benefit. The government has jurisdiction and power to act on behalf of the people in a state owned by the people for the welfare of the people. So there is no reason to be alarmed if the government takes any initiative to break the syndicate.
Chairman of Debate for Democracy Hasan Ahmed Chowdhury Kiran said in the speech of the president, along with the right of common people to vote, the right of rice should also be ensured. The previous government could not guarantee the right to vote or rice. People couldn't vote, couldn't escape the price of goods. So people have placed a lot of hope on the interim government. NBR's decision to cut tariffs on some essential commodities to keep commodity prices under control is welcome. At the same time, we hope that the government's decision to lift the LC margin on 5/6 products, including sugar, wheat, edible oil, to keep commodity prices stable in the upcoming Ramadan, will be implemented quickly.
The debaters of Bangladesh University of Business and Technology won by defeating the debaters of Comilla Victoria Government College in the shadow parliament titled 'Syndicate created by the previous government is responsible for market instability' organized by Debate for Democracy.
Judges in this competition were Professor Abu Muhammad Rais, Journalist Doulav Akhtar Mala, Md. Alamgir Hossain, Iqbal Ahsan and Md. Atiqur Rahman. Trophies, crests and certificates are given to the participating teams at the end of the competition.
