International Desk: The United States has approved the sale of $285 million worth of air defense systems to Ukraine. The country approved the sale of this air defense system of huge amount to counter the ongoing aggression of Russia. AFP reported this information in a report on Thursday (May 25). The United States on Wednesday announced approval of a $285 million sale to Ukraine of a sophisticated anti-aircraft missile system (NASAMS) and related equipment, according to reports. And through this, this North American country wants to increase Ukraine's ability to counter Russian attacks. The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency said in a statement, 'There is an urgent need to increase Ukraine's capabilities to defend against Russian missile attacks and airstrikes.

This air defense system, if available and effectively deployed, will enhance Ukraine's ability to protect its people and secure critical national infrastructure.' The agency also said the sale of these advanced defense systems also supports the national security goals of US foreign policy. The aid will act as a force for political stability and economic progress in Europe by improving the security of a country that is essentially Washington's partner. The sale of this advanced air defense system will not require the hiring of additional US government employees or contractors in Ukraine, the statement added.

The US State Department approved the sale and DSCA provided the required notification to Congress on Wednesday. AFP says Russia began military operations in Ukraine in February last year. And since the beginning of the invasion, this country in Eastern Europe has received billions of dollars in military equipment support from the United States and other allied countries. In addition, the United States, Germany and the United Kingdom are helping Ukraine with tanks after a year since the start of the war. But Wednesday's approval of a $285 million sale of air defense systems is not aid, but rather the US selling them to Ukraine.

However, Ukraine's air defense system has played an important role in protecting the country from Russian attacks and preventing Moscow's forces from gaining control of the airspace. When Russia invaded in February 2022, Ukraine's air defenses consisted mainly of Soviet-era aircraft and batteries. And since then, the Eastern European country has seen a significant increase in aid from international allies. As a result of this, Ukraine has received multiple defense systems including Najams.
