Diplomatic Correspondent: Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi today, in an important engagement as India and Bangladesh continue efforts to strengthen bilateral relations.
During the meeting, Trivedi is understood to have briefed Prime Minister Modi on developments relating to India-Bangladesh relations and his ongoing diplomatic engagement in Dhaka.
Trivedi assumed charge as India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh in June this year after presenting his credentials to Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin. His appointment marked a notable departure from the traditional practice of appointing career diplomats, as he is a senior political leader and former Union Minister.
Since taking charge, Trivedi has repeatedly emphasized the importance of strengthening people-to-people ties between India and Bangladesh. Prior to arriving in Bangladesh, he said that the two countries share common aspirations and that their relationship should be strengthened through mutual understanding, sincerity and cooperation.
The meeting with Prime Minister Modi comes at a significant time for bilateral relations. Dhaka and New Delhi have recently intensified diplomatic engagement aimed at addressing outstanding issues and creating a more conducive environment for improving ties.
On August 10, Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman also met High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi in Dhaka. During the meeting, Rahman emphasized the need for a conducive environment to reset and strengthen Bangladesh-India relations.
Trivedi’s meeting with Prime Minister Modi is therefore expected to provide an opportunity to review the latest developments in Bangladesh-India relations and discuss ways to further advance cooperation between the two neighbouring countries.
