Two sentenced to life imprisonment for abducting rickshaw driver in Jamalpur

Jamalpur Correspondent: In Jamalpur, two people have been sentenced to life imprisonment for the abduction of rickshaw driver Majnu Mia, 13 years after the incident. In addition, each has been fined Tk 100,000.

On Wednesday afternoon, Judge Muhammad Abdur Rahim of the Jamalpur Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 delivered the verdict.

The convicted individuals are Selim Islam, a resident of Distapara village in Birganj, Dinajpur, and Sohel, a resident of Chandanpur village in Islampur Upazila.

Fazlul Haq, the public prosecutor, stated that on June 12, 2012, Majnu Mia left his home in Islampur on his rickshaw and never returned. Later, during inquiries, his son received a call from an unknown number stating that his father had been abducted and demanding a ransom of Tk 50,000. Following this, on June 17, Majnu Mia’s father Khaleque Mia filed a case at Islampur Police Station against unknown individuals. Subsequent police investigation confirmed the involvement of Selim Islam and Sohel.

The court delivered the verdict in the presence of accused Selim Islam, while Sohel Mia remains absconding.
