‎Pakistan Marks Independence Day at High Commission in Dhaka ‎

Diplomatic Correspondent: Pakistan’s Independence Day was observed at the Pakistan High Commission in Dhaka on Friday with a flag-hoisting ceremony, participation from members of the Pakistani community and Bangladeshi guests, and a programme highlighting the country’s history and national priorities.

‎High Commissioner Imran Haider hoisted the national flag as the national anthem was played. Pakistani community members living in Bangladesh, Bangladeshi friends and well-wishers, students, journalists and representatives of civil society attended the ceremony.

‎Messages from Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Muhammad Ishaq Dar were read out during the event.

‎In their messages, the Pakistani leaders extended Independence Day greetings to Pakistanis at home and abroad and paid tribute to Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Allama Muhammad Iqbal and activists of the Pakistan Movement for their role in the creation of the country.
‎The messages highlighted Pakistan’s achievements in education, science and technology, sports and defence, while stressing the importance of the principles of Unity, Faith and Discipline in pursuing national development.
‎
‎Tribute was also paid to Pakistan’s armed forces and law-enforcement agencies for their sacrifices in counterterrorism operations. The leadership referred to what it described as the success of Operation Marak-e-Haq against India and reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty and territorial integrity while contributing to regional peace and security.

‎The messages also reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for the people of Jammu and Kashmir and its stated position that the dispute should be resolved in accordance with relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.
‎
‎Pakistan’s leadership also expressed concern over what it described as terrorism originating from Afghan territory and affecting neighbouring countries, including Pakistan.
‎
‎During the ceremony, prizes and certificates were presented to Bangladeshi students who participated in an essay competition titled “Historical Sites in Pakistan,” organised by the High Commission.
‎
‎The programme concluded with special prayers for the peace, progress and prosperity of Pakistan.
